Skidegate Haida Language 'Word of the Week:
May 14th: 'Xaana Kaahlii' and means 'Skidegate Inlet' (the x has a 'back of the throat sound' and the 'k' is a popping back throat 'k' sound
May 7: 'laana - means 'town' (the l has a 'pinched l-sound)
April 30: 'Tllaal Llnagaay' - means Tlell Village / Tlell is a community located mid-Graham Island (close to Port Clements)
April 23: 'ngaal' means 'kelp' (the 'ng' blends together as in 'sing' or 'long')
April 18: 'tluu' means 'boat' (rhymes with 'new')
April 11: 'xaagu' - means 'halibut' (the x has a 'back of the throat sound)
April 4: 'chiina': means 'fish' (the 'ch' sounds like 'ch' in chair or chalk)
Mar 28: 'Guud' and means 'Eagle' (

Mar 14: 'kun' and means 'whale' - The 'un' sounds like the double 'o' sound in 'look' or 'book'
Mar 7: 'taan' - means 'black bear' (the 'aa' is a soft 'a' sound such as in 'father')
Feb 29: 'xaayda' (Haida) - means 'people'. The 'x' is a back throat sound
Feb 22: 'gwaay' (rhymes with my, pie, sigh) Meaning: Island. We have also seen it spelled as Gwaii (Haida Gwaii)
Feb 15: 'k'ay' (rhymes with sky). Meaning: Sealion.
Feb 8: 'k'aaw' ('aaw' sounds like 'ow'). Meaning: Herring roe on kelp -(and it tastes so good!)

Images and Footage
The Misty Isles Economic Development Society (MIEDS) is the destination marketing organization responsible for promoting Haida Gwaii as a preferred travel destination worldwide. As the DMO we have a number of digital assets including photography and footage inspired by the pristine wilderness area of Haida Gwaii. These assets are for use in promoting Haida Gwaii as a travel destination. Our on-line galleries contain a large volume of quality, high resolution images and b-roll footage to be used considering our terms and conditions of use are met.
Digital Asset Usage Policy Guidelines
Our digital assets may be used by:
- Travel and trade media
- Travel professionals who are working with MIEDS and are promoting Haida Gwaii as a destination in their initatives
- Certain governmental bodies engaged in tourism promotional activities
Our digital assets may be used by the above groups for the following purposes:
- Sales and marketing campaigns promoting travel to and within Haida Gwaii including tactics such as newspaper and magazine advertising, travel professional destination brochures and online ads
- Editorial coverage by travel and trade media
Our digital assets may not be used for:
- Commercial purposes outside of tourism promotion
- Commercial advertising
- Placement on souvenirs, commemorative books or other consumer goods such as clothing for retail or resale
Use of MIEDS digital assets requires:
- Credit to the source
- Provision of a copy of your final output sent to media@mieds.ca

Image Gallery and B-roll Footage Library
MIEDS has gathered several thousand compelling and colourful images that may be used in articles. These photos are searchable and downloadable from our online Digital Asset Management site. They are royalty free but you are required to provide credit according to individual image requirements. View the DAMS user manual and search for images (requires username and password which will be assigned by MIEDS staff to valid users). It is requested that only images and footage that will be used in published articles be downloaded considering costs associated to this are billable to MIEDS.
