Maryanne Wettlaufer is a visual artist who moved to Haida Gwaii in 2006.
Her journey to Haida Gwaii included a formal art education at The Ontario College Of Art and a career as the Art Director at Stormtech Sportswear. A passion for adventure and an admiration for the pioneers of Canadian landscape painting led Maryanne north to Inuvik, NWT for a year and eventually to Haida Gwaii and Masset where she calls home.
In her own words she describes her work...
My paintings depict the Haida Gwaii landscape as I see it defined by the dramatic effects of natural forces. Often light hearted, my works are expressive representations of a natural world in a constant state of change with the whims of nature.
While preserving visual elements of the scene before me I use exaggerated colour and line work to express the energies defining the landscape.
As I paint I consider questions like... How would I paint the sound of the wind whipping through the tree branches? or How would I paint the tension in the forest floor as it reclaims the past?
The powerful weather trends of Haida Gwaii make for dramatic adventures into this natural world which I feel lucky to call home.
