Skidegate Days kicks off with a pancake breakfast at the 'small hall' in Skidegate. Everyone is invited to come out for the fun.
The annual Totem to Totem Marathon sponsored by the Skidegate Band Council begins and ends at the Haida Heritage Centre at Norman Pryce's 'Skidegate Pole'. The marathon includes a 'Walk to Breakfast' event in which participants run or walk from the Heritage Centre to the small hall for breakfast.
The main street in Skidegate is closed to local traffic. The food booths are decked with fried bread, pies & cookies, corn on the cob, and hamburgers and line the street.
There are plenty of activities/games for the young people, a visitor information both and 'give aways'. The touch aquarium featuring local marine life, is very popular.
Also popular are the canoe races throughout the day with teams even being formed on the beach in the spirit of competition! The races provide visitors and locals witih an opportunity to experience paddling in a traditionally constructed Haida canoe.
The Fish Splitting contest is well worth watching! The competition is fierce and the pressure is on! The cleaned salmon are contributed toward the dinner.
A dance follows the daily festivities.
Come experience Skidegate Days in July! Watch for local postings for the dates.
