Sandspit - An Ideal Island ‘Get Away’

Sandspit , a quiet and remote community on Moresby Island, is an ideal island get-away. It is accessed by a 25 minute ferry ride from Graham Island or daily Air Canada flights from Vancouver. It is also known as the ‘Gateway to Gwaii Haanas’.

The Sandpit Visitor Centre is an excellent resource to begin your island 'get away'.  The staff are knowledgeable and will assist you to make the most of your visit. The facility is bright and spacious and is conveniently located in the Sandspit airport building. The gift shop features an inspiring display of local art  such as prints, jewellery and pottery as well as a Gwaii Haanas product line, post cards and souvenirs such as glass fishing balls and ceramic mugs with Haida artwork. It’s a ‘one-stop’ souvenir shop!

The Visitor Centre also has a good selection of maps of Haida Gwaii and is one of the few local distributers of marine charts for Haida Gwaii. Choices in accommodation range from the Sandspit Inn to Guesthouses, fishing lodges, B&Bs & a hostel, Guesthouses and Hostel. There is also a private campground. Almost all accommodation is located across from the ocean - what more could you ask for!

Activities in this community are abundant. Consider the Willow’s Golf Course, a relaxing Par 72 oceanfront and forest course or the nearby world-class ocean and river fishing opportunities.

Beachcombing and beach walks are very popular (particularly as the beach is just across the road). Low tide provides wonderful opportunities to explore the rich intertidal pools.

Kayak rentals are available through Moresby Explorers while bikes can be rented through the Sandspit Visitor Centre. Vehicle rentals are available at the airport.

You will want to check out the system of easy walking/bike trails located in the middle of Sandspit. The approximately 2 km trail system, leads through a second growth forest of Alder, Spruce and Hemlock.

Other trails in the community include a wonderful walk along a grass pathway around the ‘spit’ alongside the airport property. This area is a very popular location for bird watchers during the spring and fall migrations. With a panoramic view of the open waters, Sandpit is known for its spectacular sunsets. Combined with its easy access to the lush rainforest, Sandspit is a photographer’s paradise!
