Cape Fife Trail (North Beach / Tow Hill Area)

By Katie Allen

Cape Fife is an excellent trail for the less experienced hikers such as myself. The 10km hike is relatively flat and can be achieved in 4 hours if you stop to take enough pictures and eat food.

The traillhead is well marked and is accessed on the north side of the Hiellen Bridge at the Tow Hill parking lot. The trail is an old settlers' road within Naikoon Provincial Park and leads to the East Coast of Haida Gwaii.

At the end of the trail is a campsite (with cabin included!) on the beach with a picturesque view of Hecate Strait. The cabin was built by BC Parks and the Council of the Haida Nation, to provide  shelter for hikers (woodstove, table and bunkbeds).

Although we managed to get amazing weather this late January, this could be a very challenging route if it were to rain - the trail is extremely muddy with some boardwalk that proved to be very slippery.

In all, it is a great way to spend a weekend and get some spectacular views of the night sky! My only suggestion would be to bring candles and a memory to leave behind in the visitor’s book.

How to find the Cape Fife Trail:

Drive toward North Beach along Hwy 16 (northeast of Masset) entering the Naikoon Provincial Park. The paved road soon turns to gravel. Continue driving past Agate Beach Campground until you reach the Tow Hill Parking Lot at the Hiellen River bridge. Cross the bridge and on the right is the Cape Fife trailhead sign.

Driving time is about 1.5 - 2 hours from the Village of Queen Charlotte to the Tow Hill/Blow Hole parking lot.
